Today, the robotization of the world is no longer so scary: smart mechanical "helpers" carry out complex operations, prepare food for you, transport, count and perform many other useful actions.
The fact that a person can still control the machine is encouraging, and the prospect of conquering humanity by robots remains only beyond the bounds of fiction.
However, high-tech processes, like any other development, require a price. Unfortunately, human life has acted the last time, because robots do not have sufficient intelligence to “not kill”.
Today we are considering 10 provocative situations when people died after contact with a soulless machine.
10. Regina Elsa
Three years ago, on the eve of her marriage, the girl died at the age of 20 from the "arm" of the robot. Regina worked in a factory that produced parts for machines.
On the ill-fated day, she independently tried to return one of the robots to operation. Unexpectedly for the girl, he rebooted and pushed her into the car, which caused injuries. Elsa was taken to a trauma center, where she eventually died.
It was established that the factory management violated safety precautions - about 27 rules, including forcing employees to work overtime seven days a week, as well as repair robots on their own.
9. Ramji Lal
A young Indian 24-year-old guy worked at the SKH Metals factory. There he loaded metal, while robots moved welded metal sheets.
When one such sheet was not located correctly, the conscientious Lal decided to correct it, but did not have time. The robot, working on the conveyor, performed several injections with the pointed edge of the canvas directly into Ramji's stomach.
The guy died in the hospital from extensive internal bleeding, as the internal organs literally turned into a mess.
8. Ana Maria Vital
A 40-year-old woman worked at one of the American plants where a palletizing robot was installed. Its function was to install boxes on pallets. And on one unfortunate day, the packaging got stuck inside the robot itself, and Ana entered his cell to restore the working process.
The robot was turned on all this time and suddenly grabbed Vital as one of the boxes. As a result, he simply crushed her body, and the mechanics who arrived at the wrong time tried in vain to stop the violence at the workplace.
7. Wanda Holbrook
Wanda worked at an American truck parts and accessories factory. Her responsibilities included the identification and troubleshooting of conveyor lines.
In each working section, robots were placed that were "responsible" for their part of the assembly. One of the robots managed to reach the section where Wanda was, hit her on the head and then crushed it between the hitch assemblies.
Colleagues learned about the emergency only when the usual operations on the line failed. They found Holbrooke swooning, and she died 40 minutes after the tragic accident. The woman’s husband was suing immediately with 5 companies that produced a killer robot.
6. Unknown
This sad event happened at one of the Volkswagen plants in Germany. A young 21-year-old man, together with experienced engineers, developed a robot and installed it on an engine production conveyor.
The car was placed in a special cage, observing safety precautions. However, the guy had to set up the robot, so he was next to him.
As a result of a combination of circumstances, the machine “came to life” and broke the chest to its creator, throwing it on metal layers. The young engineer died in the clinic from injuries.
5. Kenji Urada
The man became the 2nd victim in the history of mankind of unauthorized actions of the robot. In 1981, at a Japanese factory, Kenji was repairing a robot that remained on. His mechanical brush pushed the man into the crusher, where he died, despite the employees arriving in time - they did not figure out how to turn off the device.
After the precedent, the robot manufacturers prescribed additional safety points and strengthened the protective systems.
4. Mika Johnson
Three years ago, in Dallas, the guy opened fire on police officers, resulting in the deaths of 5 employees, and another 9 were injured. He was hiding in one of the local colleges where he shot an officer at the entrance.
Negotiations with Johnson were unsuccessful. The police decided to attach explosives to the robot’s arm by launching it in the college parking lot, where the criminal was hiding.
The robot eventually exploded and Mika died - this was the first time in history when law enforcement agencies used the robot to eliminate the enemy. Work with the latter, by the way, is trained in special units to combat terrorism.
3. Nine South African soldiers
A tragic story happened 12 years ago, which killed 9 soldiers and injured 14. Air defense installation Oerlikon GDF-005 failed, opening fire across its entire radius.
It was controlled using a system that allowed you to determine the target, take it into focus and attack without direct control by the operator.
South African soldiers simply trained when the anti-aircraft gun jammed and began to shoot from its 2 barrels of people who were in range.
2. Robert Williams
The man became the first person to die at the hands of the "intellectual machine." In 1979, Rob worked at the Ford factory in Michigan. The latter was equipped with robotic arms that shifted parts on the conveyor.
The accumulated errors forced the employee to search for the necessary part on his own, and at that time a robot arm weighing 1 ton hit him. The man died, and the company paid compensation of $ 10 million to his family.
The investigation made it clear that the cause of the death of Williams was the lack of safety equipment in the factory itself, as well as the absence of characteristic sound signals that warn of danger.
1. Joshua Brown
Three years ago, Brown rode on a Tesla Model S unmanned electric vehicle. The system was unable to detect an obstacle on the road - a huge truck, so the car just flew under the tractor. Tesla emerged from the back of a truck with a cut roof, then flew off the road and imprinted on a pole.
Tesla denied autopilot malfunctioning and blamed Brown, who took his hands off the steering wheel for a couple of tens of seconds. But the NTSB investigation revealed that the airbags did not deploy on time in the electric car, and the braking system was not launched.
Such cases call manufacturers of "smart" technology to take a closer look at the safety issues, instruction and serviceability of their models.
